The Unbelievable Story of Muppet The Owlet

Witness the incredible story of this adventurous little girl, Muppet the Owlet and her unparalleled drive. You will fall in love with her!

Muppet the owlet

Muppet the owlet is a (roughly) 7 week old Great Horned Owl. Around three weeks prior to this article's publication, she was found by a photographer. In fact, Muppet fell around 100 feet from her nest on the Panther Hollow Bridge in Pittsburgh's Schenley Park. Her fall sounds incredibly scary. However, Muppet wasn't badly injured.

Acting quickly, the photographer contacted Tamarack Wildlife Center. Muppet spent two weeks at Tamarack. While there, she was treated for injuries and kept safe. In addition, she was prevented from imprinting on the humans at the Center.

Muppet Returns To Schenley Park

Muppet was held at the center for two weeks partly due to the cold. Great Horned Owls are typically born a bit later in the year. However, Muppet and her two siblings hatched early. As a result, the cold was too much for her release despite her great health.

In addition, no surrogate owls could take her. So, she needed returned to her family in Schenley Park. Pittsburgh CitiParks, Public Works, Tamarack, and others returned Muppet to the park in early March. However, they didn't place her back in the nest.

Relocating Muppet

They couldn't put Muppet back in her nest. First, because owls are very protective on their young. Muppet has two siblings in the nest. As a result, it was far too dangerous to try to put her back. Second, they didn't actually need to do so.

After all, Great Horned Owls have amazing vision and hearing. As such, they placed her in a makeshift nest of her own in direct line of sight to her parents. As a result, her father began to visit and feed her.

Talk of the Town

The return of Muppet's was the talk of the town. However, Muppet has no interest in the spotlight. So, she began to make her way to safer locations overnight.

First, Muppet ventured down a branch where she was in clear view from the trail. As a result, she attracted a lot of crowds.

After her second night she moved to a nook in the rocky cliff wall. This was near a tree that her father likes to perch in. Still, people found her and would gather to look at her.

Finding Her Safe Space

After several days of attention Muppet moved closer to her parent's nest. Too, she managed to climb very high into the crown of a tree on the steep hillside. Now, she's much harder to spot (and photograph). As a result, she clearly feels safer.

In fact, she is staying in this new spot.

Visiting Muppet

Muppet the owlet, like all Great Horned Owls is not a fan of visitors. So, if you know where to find her it's best to visit only briefly and not in groups. After all, despite being large birds of prey, owls are susceptible to predation too.

I'm documenting her return. However, I'm not sharing her location or encouraging others to do so. That being said, she'll soon begin to fly and be more mobile. Therefore, I'd suggest visiting her in late March.

By April 1st Muppet the Owlet will be able to fly on her own. As a result, you can join others to watch her, her siblings, and her parents close to sunset. My advice is to do so from the east side of the Panther Hollow Bridge.
