The Power of Nature

Atlanta Nature Photographer Don Orkoskey of WDO Photography
Nothing can make you understand your place in the universe like the raw power of nature. From lightening strikes to massive water falls to unending forests - our world is incredible. Sadly not everyone can experience all of the natural wonders which is why nature photography is so important. Additionally, far too much of our wild world is under threat of destruction. We are living through a mass extinction event of our own making. It's important that we stop doing the damage we're doing.

Why I Photograph Nature

Sharing the art of photography and photographic storytelling is a big part of who I am. Learning to photograph nature helps to develop a more attentive and empathetic attitude to our world and the issues we're causing. Additionally the detail you learn to how to see from photography encourages conscious exploration of yourself.

Atlanta Wildlife and Nature Photographer

I moved from Pittsburgh to Atlanta in the summer of 2025. Exploring and photographing the wildlife and nature around Atlanta has been wonderful.

As a nature and wildlife photographer in Atlanta I want to tell the story of what lives here beyond we humans.

Atlanta is surrounded with beautiful nature filled places to experience and photograph nature and wildlife. It's also reminded me that, no matter where you live, nature is all around. In fact, just outside the window I'm sitting next to are Cardinals, Carolina Wrens, and a Joro Spider. Nature surrounds us!

Atlanta Nature Photography

Back in Pittsburgh I spent a lot of time in both Frick and Schenley Parks. Here in Atlanta it took me very little time to find an abundance of local parks teaming with wildlife and beautiful nature scenes.

Arabia Mountain

By far my favorite spot I've found in Atlanta is Arabia Mountain. The landscape at Arabia Mountain is wild and full of great scenes to photograph year round. The fall colors have been so much fun to capture!

Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park has also become a favorite. In fact, I've visited Piedmont to photograph everything from wildlife to flowers and insects. Too, because Piedmont Park is right in Midtown Atlanta it's where I'm hosting my free monthly nature photography meetups.

Atlanta Wildlife Photography

When we moved to Atlanta I wasn't sure what to expect. While I knew there would be lots of opportunities to photograph wildlife I didn't know where to start. That said, I knew who would know. So, I went to Cornell University's Ornithology Lab to see where people were finding birds. As a result, I've visited a lot of great locations. Plus, I've gotten to see and photograph countless birds and other wildlife.

Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area

One morning, when we were preparing to move to Atlanta, I sat straight up in bed. Pittsburgh is known for it's three rivers. However, I hadn't ever heard of any rivers going through Atlanta. In fact, Atlanta was founded as a railroad meeting point.

Of course, I was relieved to find that the Chattahoochee River runs adjacent to Atlanta. Plus, the Chattahoochee River NRA is an incredible place to photograph wildlife. First, the area is full of small song birds. Too, there are water fowl and wading birds.

Atlanta Wildlife Preserves

One interesting thing about wildlife photography in Atlanta is that there are so many small wildlife preserves. For example, the Lullwater Preserve on the Emory University campus. Too, there's the Clyde Shepherd Preserve just a few miles away. Both of these are great places to photograph wildlife.

In addition to these I've visited numerous suburban parks around Atlanta like Murphy Candler and Cauley Creek Park. Both of these are birding hotspots.
