After all, for more than 20 years we've been photographing puppetry. At the same time, I've participated in puppet shows in and around Pittsburgh, PA.

My name is Don Orkoskey and I'm the founder of WDO Photography. Starting in August of 2025 I moved to Atlanta.

Founded By A Puppeteer

Thus, you might not have known. However, it's true. Indeed, WDO Photography was founded by a puppeteer. That's right. In short, I spent years participating in and co-producing puppet shows in Pittsburgh.

For years I partnered with Pittsburgh puppeteering legend Dave English as part of the Schmutz Company.

Together we produced dozens of different shows over more than a decade and a half. Additionally, we presented shows through community partners including at the International Children's Festival and through the Homeless Children's Education Fund.

So, as a photographer and puppeteer I understand the unique spectacle of puppetry.

To repeat, I worked alongside master-puppeteer Dave English. Of course, Dave wasn't the only great puppeteer in Pittsburgh. In fact, I got to work with many other great puppeteers including Cheryl Capezzuti. As a result, I learned a great deal about the craft and storytelling.

The Creativity of Puppeteering

Together with Dave I worked with nearly every type of puppet. From stick puppets to marionets the Schmutz Company used unique items to tell outlandish stories.

Too, we created stop motion animation puppets. Eventually, we established a Youtube channel where we shared much of our stop motion work.

Shaped By Puppets

As a result, my time in puppetry shaped my creativity in ways that stretched beyond the stage. In fact, my penchant for storytelling photography is deeply influenced by the wild puppet shows we produced. Particularly, A Circus In My Drawers and Moses of the Allegheny, two of my absolute favorite puppet shows we did.
