Are mirrorless cameras better than DSLRs? The answer depends on what you're photographing and a few other factors. In this article we'll take a look at the differences between the two. Plus we'll discuss when the answer changes and why. So, if you're ready for a better understanding of DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras let's go!
Are Mirrorless Cameras Better Than DSLRs?
First, it's important to understand what each camera type is. If you're not familiar with how DSLRs work or what DSLR stands for then read this article. In summary, DSLR cameras have a series of mirrors in them that reflect the image from the lens into the viewfinder. Conversely mirrorless cameras don't have any mirrors. Hence the name: mirrorless.
What's The Difference?
DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are very similar. However, instead of reflecting the view from the lens into the eye-piece mirrorless cameras record the image from the lens. Then they show it to you on one or more screens.
Some less expensive mirrorless cameras do not have viewfinders. Therefore they only have the large screen on the back. However, more expensive cameras have a screen inside of the viewfinder. This shows you what the sensor sees.
Which is better?
Both types of cameras have their advantages. For example, mirrorless cameras are better at letting you focus on subjects at the very edge of the photo. However, because of the type of autofocus they rely on they can be slow to focus or miss focus in low contrast situations. This is because mirrorless cameras rely on contrast for fine-detail focusing. However, DSLRs use phase detection and a dedicated autofocus sensor.
Before anyone comes for me let me say that yes, modern mirrorless cameras DO have phase detection. However, it's still not as good as the phase detection on DSLRs. Plus, they still often rely on contrast for small adjustments in focus.
When are mirrorless cameras better?
Mirrorless cameras have a ton of advantages over DSLRs. I strongly believe that they're better beginner cameras. This is because you can see some of the changes you make immediately without needing to take a photo. Additionally, mirrorless cameras are usually lighter and therefore easier to use for long days. Plus, if you record any video they're better in that you can still use the viewfinder unlike with a DSLR while capturing video.
When are DSLRs better cameras?
Even in 2024 I can't switch to my mirrorless for wildlife photography. Wildlife and other nature photography often puts you in difficult lighting situations. This is where my DSLR really shines. In addition, the battery life is still superior. When photographing events I use both types of cameras. However, I often don't need to change the battery in my DSLR. This is true even with 10 hours of intense use. That being said, in that same time, with less use, I'll change the very same battery in my mirrorless body twice. Too, this is true even though I turn it off between shots.
