How You Become A Photographer

No matter what type of photography you want to do, here is how you become a photographer.

How You Become A Photographer

First, it's important to understand that becoming a photographer doesn't require any certification. So, the great news is that, if you take photos then you're a photographer. Of course, you're likely looking for more in-depth information so keep reading!

Learning Photography

The best way to become a photographer is to take some photography classes. However, there are a lot of different types of photography classes you can take. For example, I offer both group and private lessons. In fact, I offer not only beginner but specialized classes. That said, if you fell that a photography degree makes more sense then you might want to go to college for photography.

No matter what you choose, learning specific aspects of photography is critical if you're going to become a photographer. Of course, a lot of very talented photographer taught themselves how to use their cameras and other gear. Therefore, if you're the type of person who can learn from Youtube videos then save your money and learn that way!

What Photographers Need To Know

To be successful at photography there are some key things you need to know.

  1. Exposure and how to use your camera to adjust your exposure
  2. Composition and how to tell a story with your photos

Exposure

The first thing you need to know to become a photographer is how to control the amount of light you're turning into a photo. This is called your exposure. In addition, you need to know how to avoid things like motion blur, camera shake, and depth of field. You can learn about all of those things in my latest e-book on Exposure which is available through my website for only $25.

In addition to controlling the light you should learn about lenses, focus, and the other technical aspects of photography. Too, if you want to take photos in a studio then learning about lighting and posing makes sense.

Composition

Photography is a form of communication, like all other visual arts. Therefore, you want to make sure that you're communicating a clear message. Composition is how you do this. So, no matter what you want to say, or how compelling the story is, composition is how you get that message across successfully.

Specialized Photography

Many photographers are generalists. That is, they take photos of a lot of different subjects. That said, most professional photographers do specialize in at least one type of photography.

If you're a hobby photographer then the above knowledge might be enough. After all, exposure and composition are really universal lessons. That said, if you want to specialize as a photographer then you need to learn additional stuff.

Becoming A Professional Photographer

If you're interested in becoming a professional photographer then the first thing you need to understand is how to run a business. Of course, you can partner with someone who understands those things. However, it's best if you pay attention to the bills and income too. After all, even if you're very close partners, temptation, need, and opportunity might result in embezzlement. Therefore, pay attention to the accounting even if it's not your strong suit.

 Becoming A Better Photographer

If you're simply interested in improving your photography for the sake of becoming a better photographer here are some tips.

  1. Push yourself to try new subjects, lenses, settings, etc. - anything new.
  2. Get outside of your comfort zone and embrace mistakes.
  3. Study your work, good and bad.
  4. Find other photographers and review each other's work.
  5. Look at the work of other photographers who photograph what you like to photograph

In Conclusion

There are many different paths into photography. Too, remember, if you take photos you're a photographer - don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Additionally, find other people and learn together. That learning can happen in a formal or informal setting. Build a community and help each other grow as you're becoming photographers. Finally, take it easy on yourself. Sure, you should push yourself. However, be sure to take stock of your growth and accomplishments.
